The opening kickoff was bobbled at the 5 yard line, knocked into the endzone, kicked around in the middle of the end zone, and fallen on before Marshall arrived to tackle the Boyd player in the middle of the end zone...this was ruled a safety by 2 officials. The scoreboard read 2-0 for about 30 seconds...until Mr. white-hat came up and called an official's conference. The scoreboard was mysteriously changed back to 0-0, the ball was placed on the 20 yardline, and McKinney Boyd was given their first possession after the "touchback"...the game went on as if nothing happened. This would have been 2-0 Marshall, with the Mavericks getting the ball...this call set the pace for the game, and changed the course from the get-go.
WHAT HAPPENED?
I would ask the same about the forward progress given to Boyd's QB when he ran (under his own power) for negative 10 yards while trying to find the corner...he was given "forward progress" from when he was first hit directly behind center (before he started to run backwards). The play was never blown dead, but when he was tackled for a loss of 10, after running backwards, he was given his initial forward progress. This type of play happened no less than 5 times.
Two fumbles by Boyd (stripped balls) were returned by Marshall for would-be touchdowns... both were called back, the plays were never blown dead. The refs said the forward progress had stopped. However, situation switched, Clough had run for a gain of about 10 yards...he was met by 5 or 6 Boyd defenders and they began driving him backwards (and holding him up). The whistle blew to signal the play was over, forward progress obviously halted...the ball was then stripped by a Boyd player...and the "fumble" stood. Imagine that.
I'm not one to complain about officials too much...If the Mavs had played a good game, this one wouldn't have been close. It shouldn't have mattered, and I'm making no excuses.
That said, this officiating crew needs to be reviewed. I hope this film will be turned in. In an otherwise close game, I believe they cost the Mavs their playoff lives. Anyone else notice these things, or am I having a twilight zone moment?
The stats show that the Mavericks far outplayed the "potent offense" of McKinney Boyd. This game was an ugly one, in foul weather. It came down to turnovers, special teams, and officials. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
