How can you see anything when you don't even live here?

This program is not headed to the toilet. But I think it would be a mistake to abandon ship right now.

This coach had us within one game of a district title last year. We lost two very close games to Kilgore and WH. The loss to McKinney was more because of the weather than it was anything. We were unable to move the ball in a driving freezing rain storm. 8 turnovers didn't help.

This season..... we've lost 4 games to 4 teams that are all top ten teams.

Yes....we had Longview where we wanted. Yes.....we were flat against Texas High..... and yes..... we shouldn't have been blown out by SS.

But in all honesty, we are not a better team than any of them. I think we are better than the score shows in any of them..... but I honestly don't think we would have beat any of them even if we had played a perfect game. Longview has barely broken a sweat this season. Ultimately their running game wore us down. Texas High might be the best team in the district right now....... and SS has one of the top QB prospects in the NATION.

Should we take care of business tonight.....we will be headed to the playoffs where we will face a 9-1 Lindale team that will most likely be co-champs with Kilgore. What if we win that game? Then we will get either Ennis or Waxahachie....who have both been in the AP poll this season. Then we will have either a 12-0 Denison team or a 12-0 Rockwall Heath team that beat HP last night.

I think the tell-tale of this staff will be next season. If things do not go well next season, then it will be fair to reevaluate the program. SS will not have a superman QB, Texas High and Longview will be their normal selves. If things go poorly.....then I think the staff will have some serious explaining to do.

But this season.....with the combination of injuries, a once in a lifetime player for SS, a Longview team on mission from 5A, and a few bad breaks.....it's hard to pin all the Mavs problems on the coaches. Are they blameless? No. But the guys have to perform....and they haven't week after week. No one can make them catch, no one can make them tackle, no one can make them block, and no one can make them not fumble.

I don't think the ship is sinking. I don't think the house is on fire..... and I don't think it's time to push the panic button.

But I also don't think fans and administration want to be complacent either.

Wait and see...... and act when we are convinced it's time.

I think the tell-tale of the future of this staff is next season.

It should be one of nothing but respect.....

Kilgore is 1-1 against this staff
Texas High is 1-1 against this staff
Hallsville, Pine Tree, and Henderson iare all 0 for everything against this staff
Nac has one win in 10 years......
SS has played one game against us..... let's see how they are without Mr. Everything next year
Whitehouse is 2-0 but never beat us by more than 4 points.
Longview is the lone team in this region that has had our number.

So.....given no one having great success against us....I'm curious to know what others think. Because none of them have dominated us in any way. And who cares what coaches from 5A, 3A, or 2A schools think???

We are in 4A...... and given the scoreboard and the record against us..... no one in East Texas can talk too much crap about the Mavs or this staff. Because if they do, they are putting their own program down too.... because we have beaten them all with the exception of Longview.

1. No one said Marshall fans were happy. Of course we want to be district champs. But the fact is..... LONGVIEW AND TEXAS HIGH ARE BOTH MORE TALENTED THAN MARSHALL IS THIS YEAR. There is no two ways about it. I think we have more talent than SS.....but the Wildcats have a once in a lifetime player this season. He will be gone next season.

2. Loyal to a fault? Parker left because he wanted to. So did Southern. Harper left because he knew he was about to be asked to leave. Harris got us within one ice storm of the region finals last year. Are we going to blame the 8 turnovers in the game against McKinney Boyd on him? He wasn't on the field. Are we going to blame him it was 28 degrees and we had no passing game? Had Marshall beat Boyd.... and advanced to the Region II finals.....would you be less critical? Longview has more talent than Marshall. Period. I don't care what the score was at halftime...... LONGVIEW IS BETTER THAN MARSHALL. I'm sorry that bothers you so much....but it's the truth. The same goes for Texas High. Should our game with them been closer than 29-4? YES. Do I think we had the talent to win? Probably not. As for SS.....I'm willing to bet the playing field will be tilted heavily in our favor. I read where you say Rollison is overrated....... you are one of a FEW scouts that thinks so. Rollison is very good....he carries that team to victory without much of a defense and with little else on offense besides his ability. An 8-2 record shows that.

3. And I promise you...... Moses could be the coach of the Mavs.... and let them miss out on the playoffs for a year or two..... and Moses will be looking for a new job. I think expectations are higher now than they were 20 years ago. Do we forget how many non playoff seasons Parker had before the 88-90 trifecta? Why did he lose early on? Bad coaching.....or just losing to better teams? I want to know the difference.

4. I'm offended that you say Marshall fans are just happy with settling for this.... or settling for that. We aren't. But we play the cards delt to us. If the UIL still only allowed one playoff team to the post season.... then that's how it would be. Same with 2 teams..... 3...... 4.... or if everyone made it. Fact is..... Mav fans want to win. We win more than a lot of teams. We lose some we wished we didn't. But that's how it is for every team. How many titles does Longview have. None in this generation. Kilgore has one.... with early exits most of their other years. Texas High has had a few nice runs. One title. Marshall has 2 title games and a region semifinal last season..... and here we are this year with another chance. What kind of run would satisfy you??

5. All the talent Marshall has year in and year out. I agree.....Marshall has strong talent. But does it occur to you that so does Kilgore and WH and Longview and Texas High and others? We don't have the market cornered in talent. Even losing programs can have a good season now and then...... to say we out talent every team we play is ridiculous. That has never been the case in my life time for Marshall. Sometimes we have more talent and win....sometimes as have more talent and lose. But sometimes we have less talent.... and guess what? Sometimes we win and sometimes we lose. What do you consider acceptable???

6. Who has tons of state titles on their walls??? No one in east texas. Longview hasn't won one since the great depression. Kilgore and texas High each have ONE in their entire histories. Lufkin has ONE. JT has one 30 years...... who are these mighty programs that line their walls with state titles? Southlake Carroll? Converse Judson? Katy? programs like that are rare....... they are the exceptions.... not the norms.

7. And I laugh at anyone in East Texas that thinks Marshall has bad coaching. Because.....like I said...... other than Longview..... this staff has beaten them all. There is no program in this area that has dominated us. Period.

8. Since you seem to be so critical of 4th place finishes and so high on coach Southern..... do you need to be reminded that Marshall was a THIRD PLACE team in 2004??? Back in the day.... 3rd place wouldn't have gotten you to the playoffs. But Lo and behold...... that third place Mav team went to the title game. but we settled for third place.....right???

Rodney Southern was here five seasons.

2002- 5th place district finish
2003- 4th place district finish
2004- 3rd place district finish
2005- 1st place district finish
2006- 4th place district finish

5th? 4th twice??? 3rd? Are you sure Southern is the paragon of coaching greatness you want to compare other coaches to?

In 2002 Southern lost to Huntington (WTF???), Pine Tree (bigger WTF???), MP, Atlanta........ and was a hail marry from losing to Hallsville and finishing dead last in district. The talent in 2002 was no lower than it ever has been. So don't tell me it wasn't because he didn't have talent.

in 2003 he still got throttled by Kilgore and Texas High......and yes Longview. I'm seeing a trend that extends passed this current staff. Southern was 0-2 against Texas High. He was 2-4 against Kilgore. Was he outcoached in those games? Or out talented??? Tell me. Howdo those losses from back then mean so little now but they mean so much more with this staff????

Why was losing to Longview, Texas High, and Kilgore so forgiveable for Southern........ yet such a thorn in the side for this staff??? We were losing to them under Southern...... we have lost to them under Harris. But Harris is inept???

And we can talk about the early Parker years too..... they weren't rosey either. He just capped it off with a good three year run. To hear some Mav fans talk.... he lead Marshall to one of the greatest dynasties in Texas HS football. But no...... it was one title.... one semifinal.... and one quarterfinal. Three good runs. Kinda pales when you compare it to SLC or Katy or judson......

I get sick of hearing about the good ole days.... Marshall had 3 good seasons in the 80's. You would have thought Parker had parted the red sea. He did not.
Harper made the playoffs 4 times in the 90's....... nor did he part the red sea
And 2004 and 2005 were great.....but we came up short in those games too......

Southern made mistakes. I remember some of the threads on here railing against him. All coaches do.

I'm just saying we shouldn't jump ship on this staff. I'm not saying they should be given a free pass to mediocrity...... they shouldn't. They should be held accountable to WINNING. But it's premature to be firing somone only 2 years into their tenure. That makes no sense. If we did that to everyone..... Parker and Southern would have been gone long before they would have accomplished anything.
