We are going to need a lot of guys to step up next year. I truly believe they will be able to do it. We are losing size and experience on O and D but have some
guys that can come in and fill the voids. Arron Franklin will be back from his knee injury and should anchor the defense at linebacker. He should have no
problems getting D1 attention!
We have guys coming up that can get the job done at several positions. QB's that are primed and ready to lead the team down the field but we seem to handcuff them on most drives by only running the ball until we are behind and then expect a QB/WR to bail us out. I have spent that last 18 years coaching and have always felt it is important to coach a player to his strengths and not to a philosophy. I find this makes the entire unit stronger. Who knows? Get ready for the ride and it will not be long until spring practice begins! Merry Christmas |

Who do yall think the QB will be?
Brandon Fitzgerald did a great job last year if you ask me, and showed he can be the starter. However, Chandler Hancock is supposed to be good. I think if Chandler has a good spring, and does what I have heard he can do, then Coach Harris will have a tough decision on his hands. One thing that has frustrated me the last couple of years, is the QB carousel that seems to keep going around and around. In 07 it was Jones and Hood, and while Jones was the better athlete of the two, I think Hood was the better passer, and we had a stable full of WR's to throw to including Jones. In 08 it was Jones and Fitzgerald, and once again Jones was the better athlete, and Fitzgerald was the better passer with plenty of WR's to throw to...including Jones. CJ Byrd was a dual threat that would beat you with his legs and his arm. I dont have a problem with a dual threat QB as long as he can pass first. Its hard to beat the good teams when your not balanced. I think Fitzgerald showed he can be the kind of dual threat Qb that can pass first and run effectively when needed. If Coach Harris goes with Hancock, then we should see more of a pocket QB, and less of the QB keeper stuff. If its Fitzgerald he goes with, then we should see more of the same from the last couple of seasons with more emphasis on passing the ball...if Coach Harris learned anything from this past season that is. Its gonna be imperative for Coach Harris to get it right before next season starts. Even if he misses the mark on which QB to use, he still has to be smart enough to use him right. If he gets the wrong combination of QB and offensive philosophy, and we have another disappointing season like we did this year, it could spell the end of the road for Coach Harris. |

I wonder if Franklin is totally healthy going into next year will he get to see some time on the offensive side of the ball. With his speed and overall
athletic ability he could definately be a weapon out of the backfield. Especially since we lost both Darius and KD. Im not sure who we have coming up that can
go in for Haigwood from time to time...maybe a possibility? If we can solidify a young o-line and come up with a decent passing game with either Chandler or
Fitz I think JC can be a force with his tough running style. This is going to be a very interesting offseason because there are so many unknowns going into
next year. Players to watch next year in my opinion are QB's Fitz/Hancock, LB Franklin, RB Haigwood, WR's Harris and Daveon (Williams?), OL Harper, LB
Kelly. I'm sure there are more that I'm forgetting but these are the players that stand out right now. 7-on-7 will be more important than ever for the
Mavs with the apparant QB battle and give some young guys the opportunity to step up and get noticed. I think it will be a critical year for Coach Harris to
see how he puts together a "rebuilding" team that really doesnt have alot of fanfare going in.

I agree with Mavgrad.
These coaches need to look at the talent we have... no matter which they pick to be QB, and mold the offense around what THE PLAYERS do best. It seems to me.... we have been trying to mold players into our system instead of molding the system into what the players do best. I also agree that a balanced attack is how you win. Pass only (ignore Sulphur Springs) and run only teams generally don't do well. You have to do BOTH. We can't wait until the 5th or 6th game after we are down by 20 points in a game to expect a passing game to magically appear because we are in a hole. The passing game needs to be put into place in the SPRING. Worked on all through 7 on 7 and then polished in nondistrict play. That way.... when we need it in week 5.... it's second nature to us. I realize it's tempting to shove the ball down Huntington's and Jacksonville's throats for 500 yards rushing "just because we can". But why not pass against them too just for the sake of making us better. Rushing for 500 yards in all those early games did nothing for our passing game against Longview, Texas High, and SS. But at that point... it was too late to be developing a passing game. Secondly...... we need to shake up our nondistrict schedule. I think Neville is a worthy opponent..... their record speaks for it self. But Jacksonville and Huntington.......I'm not sold on. I can't help but wonder if playing Kilgore in nondistrict hurt us in the playoffs. I mean...we played all our cards for them in September. The element of suprise was gone..... which could have made the November game easier to defend. Just a thought. Louisiana has their realignment this year. Maybe we can lock down some better opponents. I mean....look at Longview: Allen, Lufkin, Evangel...... I'd rather see us find a way to play Evangel, Carthage, West Monroe.... anyone better than what we have faced. And I also agree...... Harris has much to prove this year. Another lost season and the writting could be on the wall for him and his staff. The Mav coaching staff needs to open the playbook, stop being so conservative, trust their players, and PLAY BALL TO WIN and stop playing to NOT LOSE. It's maddening. |

Don't forget about probably the biggest play maker that came out of nowhere last season. Jamal Anderson was just a Jr I believe, and will be taking a lot
of the load off of Haigwood. Also Londell Perkins will be a jr and could be big the next 2 years if he chooses to be.

I agee with most of the comments in this string. I worry about JC and his knee. Curious how much he will be able to endure. He is a gamer and will do all he
can to be ready. As for Londell, I don't think that we will be able to depend on him even making the team. He did not get to finish the JV schedule due to
being at the BAC center for 45 days or so for of the field issues. Hopefully for his sake he can turn it around and stay out of trouble. We do seem to cater to
some of these issues as of late so he may be on the field.
I do hope we change our Offensive philosophy though. We will have guys in place and with a good spring and lots of 7 on 7 QBs and WRs should prove to be game changers. Never know with young guys though we will see. So many teams in the 4/5 wide O now, we HAVE to make changes in order to play in December. |
